UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Rohingya Crisis

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to organize a high-level conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. The resolution was sponsored by Malaysia and Finland and aims to address the ongoing crisis and seek solutions for the affected communities.

During the debate, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Md Salahuddin Noman Choudhury, called for a vote after Russia proposed several amendments that Bangladesh did not accept. The President of the General Assembly conducted the vote, leading to the resolution’s adoption with strong support. A total of 141 countries voted in favor, while 10 countries abstained. No country voted against the resolution.

The adoption of this resolution is seen as a major step toward addressing the Rohingya crisis. It comes at a crucial time when Bangladesh is preparing to host a special summit on the issue in New York this September. The resolution highlights the need for international cooperation to ensure the rights and safety of the Rohingya people.
