The Myanmar Military Council has banned foreign journalists from reporting on the earthquake that struck the country on March 28. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake, centered near Sagaing City, caused major destruction in several areas, including Pyawbwe township. Many buildings collapsed, and people are struggling without electricity and clean water.
The junta’s spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, said on March 30 that foreign media had asked to enter Myanmar but were not allowed due to security concerns. He claimed that hotels were damaged, officials were busy with relief work, and the government could not take responsibility for foreign reporters’ safety. His statement was also shared on the junta’s Telegram channel.
Local journalist Myint Kyaw criticized the ban, saying it was just an excuse to control information. He argued that foreign journalists are used to covering disasters and can manage their own resources. He believes the real reason for the restriction is to prevent the world from seeing the full impact of the earthquake and how the government is handling the crisis.
According to a report from Mizzima on March 30, nearly 3,000 people have died, and more than 3,000 were injured in the disaster. Around 70 people are still missing, and the number of casualties may increase as rescue efforts continue.
