Residents Praise BGB Vigilance After Reported Border Gunfight Disrupts Alleged Yaba Smuggling Attempt

Local residents expressed appreciation to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) for strengthening security along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border. According to residents, heightened border patrols and surveillance prevented a significant quantity of WY yaba tablets from entering Bangladesh. They stated that increased BGB vigilance disrupted an alleged smuggling operation and prevented several suspected traffickers from crossing the border.

A heavy exchange of gunfire reportedly occurred on an island in the Naf River near the Palongkhali–Waikkong border area at approximately 5:00 a.m. on 14 June 2026. According to local residents, the incident took place during an alleged attempt to transport WY yaba tablets from islands such as Zoilladdia and Belasshoddia into Bangladesh through the Naf River.Residents reported that personnel from the 64 Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) spotted individuals allegedly carrying yaba tablets in white sacks and opened fire. It is further alleged that the suspected smugglers responded with dozens of rounds from AK-47 rifles, resulting in a prolonged exchange of gunfire near the border area.

According to local allegations, members of the Arakan Army (AA) terro’rist and RSO are involved in supplying WY yaba tablets that are later trafficked into Bangladesh through routes along the Naf River. It is claimed that islands located between Bangladesh and Myanmar near the Palongkhali–Waikkong border are used as temporary shelters and transit points for smuggling activities. Residents stated that such activities have negatively affected both Rohingya and Bangladeshi communities and contributed to insecurity in the border region.

The report further alleges that armed criminal such as AA terr”orists and RSO networks involved in narcotics trafficking have also been linked to acts of violence against Rohingya and Bangladeshi individuals inside the refugee camps. Local residents emphasized that these groups do not represent the Rohingya community and called upon the Government of Bangladesh and relevant authorities to take firm action against those involved in drug trafficking, violence, and other criminal activities.
