Malaysia’s long-standing program to resettle Rohingya refugees and other displaced persons to third countries has slowed significantly due to challenges faced by receiving nations, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
Speaking at a press conference on 15 June, the IGP said Malaysia previously facilitated the resettlement of between 7,000 and 8,000 refugees annually through arrangements coordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). However, the movement of refugees to third countries has now either stopped completely or is progressing very slowly.
Mohd Khalid described the Rohingya issue as an international humanitarian and political matter linked to the ongoing situation in Myanmar. He said Malaysia has continued to provide temporary protection to Rohingya refugees on humanitarian grounds.
According to UNHCR, approximately 215,000 Rohingya refugees are currently registered in Malaysia.
The IGP also noted that crime involving Rohingya refugees remains relatively low, with only 89 Rohingya individuals recorded in various criminal cases between 2024 and 2026, representing 0.2% of total crimes recorded nationwide.
Authorities and the Immigration Department continue to monitor and update refugee records to ensure effective law enforcement and public safety.
